As a painter, my process begins when I have an emotional connection to the world around me and continues as I try to convey the power of my experience to others through my art. I do not merely want to capture the image so it can be identified, but to breathe emotional life into it, inviting others to share in that drama.
One of the main challenges with each painting is to “flirt with my subject matter, not marry it.” This means that, as the artist, I have the right to interpret a scene so it conveys the emotional connection and impact that I want my viewers to have. In this way, my artwork gives a voice and an experience to others that they might not otherwise have ~ feelings of hope, joy, excitement, inspiration, and wonder.
“As an artist, I only flirt with my subject matter, I don’t marry it.”
